My story as I see it...

Successful English privately owned ltd domestic appliance repair company.

In 2001 I turned 31 was lost with loads of jobs I hated and felt under utilised I had been an Internet Marketer and web designer for about 6 years as well as a few other things trying to make my mark on the Internet.

What Happened Why the Extreme Change?

Well I used to buy Domain names, that's the address like www.repairmanAcademy.com and hope I could sell them for some cash!

You may of heard back in the day somebody having hold of www.DavidBeckham.co.uk and trying to hold him to ransome over it. Laws where passed and things were changed. Yes I did make some money. £1500 in fact for 2 domain names, but that was over 15 years.

Anyway, everything changed because of a domain name www.AllBubbleNoSqueak.com. I bought this because of an advert on TV. There was a big multinational comapany advertising a choc bar. but they had only bought the .co.uk version. I bought it to SELL it. I tried selling it to them but they were hard to deal with. So what I did was to associate it with washing machine repairs. It's all I could think about to stop them from getting it for nothing.

Now I had a washing machine repair and sales business, but no idea on what to do.

I thought it might be fun to grab a broken washing machine and repair it. So I did and ended up in the washing machine repair and sales business.

I had No marketing ability, but I did have enthusiasm, a bag full of it!

So like you I learned the business from the ground up. I was not making money though well not enough for a new car or a bigger house or even enough to go on a cheap holiday.

What changed Well read on.

I was working over 15k and worked 100 hours plus per week, working,extremely hard not smart!

Now it's 2010 I'm on target for £220,000 with 40 hours per week and 3 engineers, I have 4 houses all rented and providing extra income as well as a really nice car with no toolbox and no van. I just drive around visiting friends and friends and answering the phone. I really can enjoy life now, with what I've learned!

Success was not on my mind when I started.

I just absolutely loved learning about and repairing appliances and the feeling of gaining a useful trade that can serve any community in the UK or maybe even the world.

Let down.

The only thing letting me down, was not my energy I had bags, not my passion for people and appliances because I have a massive desire to serve. But my voice, I didn't know how to tell the world that I offered an honest caring genuine repair service!

Well, two goverment run business training courses later, and I'm still in the same boat, typically these courses are run by Ex bank managers whom are very good at detail and finance but not good at marketing.

My saviour...

I turned to the internet and tried to find stuff that would be useful to advance my business, well after to sorting through get rich quick and other related scams. I came across some well writing Yellow page ad books, some extremely rare marketing books, but you will be shocked that although the yellow pages industry is well over 16,000,000,000 a year in ad sales there isn't really many books on the subject or sites. I've found and studied about 8 books on directory advertising.

But!

this only left me with a massive gapping hole of hunger! so I went to the library and started studying all the ads in all the sections and creating charts with words and key points. Once I'd decided by analysis which I thought were the best ads, I rang the people to ask them for their results. with reluctance I got some guys to share their story and help, as well as some abuse from others.

Amazing results!

This took me about 3 months of solid study in the directories pouring over photo copies and yellow page ads and ringing and analysising other 3000 conversations. I was ready to rock and roll.

5 years wasted.

the previous 5 years of ads were wasted. They were mainly wasted due to me not being interested and letting the yellow page reps take control. But now I take control and dictate my terms to them because I'm battle scared and been dicked around by them bastard reps one too many times. I know what I need and that is my own designed ads that are based on my own diligent study and experimentation.

I can now look at an ad in the yellow pages and tell you the mistakes in your ads. but this is easy because I have a formula!

If it wasn't for my sheer determination to make it pay, I would've of stayed broke operating a business that barely covered the bills.

I've spent the previous 5 years testing ads to varying effect in the yellow pages and will continue to study and test until it is finally put to bed and the internet takes over. I wll also continue to test and change my 60 or so websites until they too generate adaquate income to overtake the directories!

The biggest mistake you can make is to not test!

I study diligently, and only apply things by testing. because you never know what works till you test it on others. you monitor the results. when the results are in and look good. you test again in another area. If then the results are conclusive. You roll it out in a measured controlled way. growing steadily year by year.
